Titolo:Variable stars a decade of historiography on the Sidereus nuncius / Eileen Reeves.
Abstract:This essay provides an overview of the abundant historiography of the past decade on the Sidereus Nuncius. The recent attention both to the hypothetical and actual antecedents of the spyglass that emerged in the Hague in the fall of 1608, and to Galileo's place within a particular intellectual, cultural and social context prior to his sudden appearance as the leading natural philosopher of early modern Europe, has strongly conditioned our views of the Sidereus Nuncius and its author. The past decade's scholarship might thus be divided into four unequal subsections: the telescope before Galileo, Galileo before the telescope, the composition of the Sidereus Nuncius, and the impact and diffusion of that treatise. These latter two rubrics have drawn on the increased scholarly interest in the material text, in the dynamics of the book trade, in the mechanisms of disclosure and secrecy, in the coordination of observation, graphic representation, and analysis with the task of rhetorical persuasion, in the diffusion of the Sidereus Nuncius, or synopses of its claims, among specific intellectual and religious communities, and in the cascade of responses, rebuttals, transmissions, and replications of Galileò‰s discoveries to a readership throughout Europe and well beyond
