Titolo:Disputazioni cosmologiche a Helmstedt : Magnus Pegel e la cultura astronomica tedesca tra il 1586 ed il 1588 / Pietro Daniel Omodeo.
Abstract:This paper presents three cosmological disputations propounded around 1586-1587 at the University of Helmstedt by two Aristotelian scholars, John Johnston and Simon Menz. They attacked philosophical and ethical doctrines that emerged from the post-Copernican debate, namely physical and not conventional (mathematical) Copernicanism, as well as neo-Pythagoreanism, (Epicurean) atomism, and vitalism. Moreover, they defended peripatetic views on place, time and motion in order to deny infinite space, the cosmological principle of homogeneity and the existence of void. These cosmological disputations are here examined in the light of the contemporary astronomical debate in which participated theoretical astronomers like Brahe, Rothmann and Ursus, mathematical physicists like Benedetti, and philosophers like Bruno. A direct involvement of the latter is plausible, because he was in Wittenberg and Helmstedt exactly in that period, and disseminated there an eclectic philosophy whose tenets are diametrically oppositeto those defended by Johnston and Menz
