Titolo:L'inaltérabilité du ciel pose un problème théologique / Philippe Boulier.
Abstract:The Sky's inalterable nature gives rise to a theological problem. In his Letters on sunspots, where he sustained his view about a unified world, in which both the region of the Earth and the Sky were identical or similar in nature, and in which the celestial bodies were subject to changes such as alterations, generations and corruptions, a world different from the Aristotelian cosmology, where the Sky was a region devoid of mutation, Galileo had thought to a new argument involving theological considerations. In this argument, he developed the idea that the difference between his vision of the universe and that of Aristotle was fundamentally reducible to the difference between the Christian doctrine of Creation and the Aristotelian thesis about the eternity of the world. In other words, the new vision of the Sky and the new conception of the world were the only views truly conform to the Christian doctrine. The inalterability of the Sky had been conceived in a physics that didn't correspond to the Christianworld. The argument remained invisible, because cancelled before the publication. It seems an echo of a famous letter, written some years earlier to Galileo by his pupil Benedetto Castelli, in which the latter tried to show that the Aristotelian proofs about the world̉s eternity were rende red ineffective by Galileỏs new theory of motion. We propose to explain both Galileo and Castellỉs arguments and to analyse their conceptual relations
