Titolo:Spotted felines and the spotted sun the Lincei and Galileo's Istoria / Paolo Galluzzi.
Abstract:The Istoria e dimostrazioni intorno alle macchie solari, published in Rome in 1613, was the first printed work issued by the Academy of the lynx-eyed, founded in 1603, in which the academic emblem of the crowned lynx appeared in the frontispiece. The essay outlines the motivations that induced prince Federico Cesi, the Academy's patron, to publish such an extremely costly book, due to the high print run and, above all, to the numerous copper engravings. The analysis focuses on the attempt by Prince Cesi to suggest a direct continuity between the research strategies established at the moment of the foundation of the Academy and the sensational celestial novelties disclosed by the Galilean telescope. Like that of the sunspots, which offered sound confirmation of the fluid nature of the sky, a fundamental pillar for Cesi's vision of nature, of its workings and goals.
