Dating Federico Commandino's teaching activity in Urbino / Martin Frank.
Abstract:
The present article attempts to date a crucial period of Commandino's scientific activity: his lessons on mathematics in Urbino. They led not only to his important edition of Euclid's Elements, but also to the establishment of the so called Urbino School, which was to assume a decisive role in the recovery of ancient mathematical knowledge and would, thus, make an important contribution to laying the groundwork for the scientific revolution. Recently found documents indicate that the beginning of Commandino's lessons can be pinpointed to the autumn of 1568. Further, they seem to have essentially ended in the autumn of 1574.
