Titolo:Il processo Galileo e la Repubblica Romana del 1849 / Andrea Del Centina, Alessandra Fiocca.
Abstract:In 1849 Giacomo Manzoni, who was at the time Minister of Finance of the Roman Republic, and Silvestro Gherardi, assistant to the Minister of Public Education and later Minister ad interim, had been granted access to the archives of the Sant'Offizio. Manzoni took away a large number of manuscripts and books with the aim of studying the history of religious reform in Italy. Gherardi was instead principally interested in Galileo's trial. In this paper we reconstruct, mainly on the basis of unpublished documents, the circumstances of this removal of archival material by Manzoni and of the events that followed. In particular, we trace the history of the manuscript that Gherardi used in 1870 to edit for publication the thirty-one decreta issued during Galileo's trial. Our research shows that Manzoni confiscated documents concerning other trials conducted during the Inquisition whichwere never returned to the Sant'Uffizio
