Titolo:Galileo and Milton / William R. Shea.
Abstract:Galileo is the one and only person among John Milton's contemporaries mentioned by name in Paradise Lost, the greatest epic poem in the English language. In the politically troubled context of England, Galileo stands as a symbol of the philosophical freedom that Englishmen ought to enjoy and of which, on account of the Inquisition, Galileo was deprived. It has sometimes been asked, Is Galileo a cryptic self-portrait of Milton? The case for identification lies in their personal traits. Both men were blind, both became political outcasts, and both considered themselves geniuses. But there is more at issue than a political association of ideas. Galileo also exerted a significant inf luence on Milton's conception of the universe as well as on his ideas about the relation between science and religion. How this came to pass, and how Milton was brought in contact with Galileo and the intellectual climate of Italy is shown and discussed in this paper
