Titolo:Galileo and Plato's myth of the origin of the System of the world / Adriano Carugo.
Abstract:In his Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo published in 1632 Galileo described the origin of the planetary system by imagining that God, after creating the planets, dropped them and let them fall with accelerated motion until each of them reached its intended speed, and that then he turned their straight motion into a circular motion with uniform speed. Galileo ascribed the idea of such construction of the planetary system to the ancient philosopher Plato, but none of his contemporary philosophers and scientists, from Mersenne to Gassendi, could find any trace of that idea in Plato's dialogues. Modern scholars were also unsuccessful in their search. The reason why Galileo, even in the later Discorsi e dimostrazioni matematiche intorno a due nuove scienze, published in 1638, insisted on the attribution of his own idea to Plato is not obvious. I would suggest that this misattribution was owing either to his lack of direct knowledge of Plato's works or to his desire to resort to the authority of theancient philosopher in order to give a cosmological confirmation to his law of the acceleration of falling bodies, which none of his contemporary scientists could confirm by experiments
