Titolo:La presencia de la obra de Galileo en dos disputationes circulares mantenidas por Alessandro Marchetti en la Universidad de Pisa / María Isabel Sánchez Fructuoso.
Abstract:In the second half of the seventeenth century the University of Pisa was a scene of intellectual ferment in which various figures of great stature emerged. One was Alessandro Marchetti, protegé of the scientist, co-founder of Accademy del Cimento, and a leading figure in the renovation movement, Giovanni Alfonso Borelli. Borelli's influence was crucial in Marchetti's formation; the latter would go on to become professor at the University of Pisa and the author of a masterly translation of Lucretius's De rerum natura. This essay will examine a letter written by Marchetti, most probably to his maestro Borelli Lettera di Alessandro Marchetti a Giuseppe del Papa il 5 dicembre 1667, now conserved in the Biblioteca Labronica of Livorno which summarizes two philosophicaldebates or circoli held by Marchetti and one of his colleagues. The first of the debates focused on the impossibility for Heaven, to be generated or corrupted, and the second on the definition of the continuum. In the first Marchetti adopted an anti-Aristotelian position, while in the second he found himself defending the Aristotelian definition of the continuum. We will show how the author used his profound knowledge of Galileo's work and scientific method to defend the innovative/radical new approach of the filosofi ingenui e spassionati, who sought to challenge the Aristotelian dogmatism of the peripatetici
