Abstract:Abstract: Vincenzo Galilei (1520?-1591), bitter at never receiving the patronage he felt his musical compositions and theoretical publications deserved, was determined that his older son Galileo would establish the family's fortune via medicine, thus gaining the younger son Michelangelo access to the courts of Europe as a lute virtuoso and champion of his father's compositional theories. The sons' lives unfolded otherwise. Galileo became a radical scientific experimenter and theorist, provoking as much antagonism as fame from both the catholic Church and the scientific establishment of northern Italy. Michelangelo became a musician but never achieved his father's expectations. The lives of these three men can be illuminated by insights from the disciplines of history, social psychology, musicology, rhetoric and Freudian theories of ego development and family dynamics. Questions about the relationship of science, art and the unconscious are raised.
