Titolo:Back to battle : the Latin edition of the Dialogue and of the Letter to Christina (1635-1636) / Lucia Bucciarelli.
Abstract:The story of the Latin edition of both the Dialogue and the Letter to Christina of Lorraine, which were published in Strasbourg after the 1633 condemnation, represents a meaningful topic of study because it allows the reader to catch how Galileo's works continued to spread throughout Europe despite the Holy Office's inflexibility. The present study intends to read the facts related to those editions through the concept of dissimulation. As a very widespread practice of the 17th century, which was even defined an art by his prime theorist Torquato Accetto, dissimulation was an indispensable expedient to escape from the strict intellectual surveillance exercised by the Catholic Church. My aim is to highlight the central and subtle role that Galileo played in order to realise those editorial operations. After the condemnation of 1633, he was caged in his Arcetri's house and not allowed to express his cosmological views. Notwithstanding the dire situation, he came up with a subtle plan. A close reading of the clandestine missives between the Pisan mathematician and his correspondents together with an accurate analysis of the manuscripts related to the two Latin works show Galileo's direct and until now overlooked involvement. Galileò‰s role in the diffusion of Copernicanism after his condemnation was definitely central, although concealed under dissimulation.
