Titolo:Occhiale, cannone, cannocchiale e telescopio : una storia lincea / Giuseppe Patota.
Abstract:This contribution corrects various points in B. Migliorini's reconstruction of the history of occhiale, cannone, cannocchiale and telescopio, the four words used since the end of the first decade of the seventeenth century to the present day, whether side by side or superimposed, to indicate the object (and substitutes for the object) made famous by Galileo. In particular, the author notes that the first original name in Italian of the instrument is found in a letter from P. Sarpi dated 23 July 1609 and that the term telescopio is overwhelmingly preferred in both Galileo's works and letters, unlike what had been claimed by Migliorini, according to whom Galileo used cannone, occhiale and telescopio with equal freedom. The author also reconstructs the lexicographic events of cannocchiale and telescopio, amending errors present in various dictionaries, especially recent ones, highlighting and correcting in particular a sensational oversight present in the cannocchiale entry of the most important twentieth century historical-etymological dictionary, still an essential reference for those who study the vocabulary of Italian and its history.
