| Abstract: | This paper gives a brief account of changing conceptions of the Sun from 1542 (Nicolaus Copernicus) to 1705 (Halley's comet). It explores the obstacles to the acceptance of Copernican heliocentrism and the emergence of the novel claims that the Sun is a star and that the Earth is a planet within what was now called the Solar system. |
