| Titolo: | The early reception of Leonardo's most advanced technology in Spain : Juan de Espina / Sara Taglialagamba. |
| Abstract: | Leonardo's technological ideas did have an early circulation and a considerable diffusion in the first half of seventeenth-century Spain thanks to the presence of autograph material. This essay aims to focus on the early reception of Leonardo's most advanced technology in Spain after that Pompeo Leoni, a sculptor in the service of King Philip II and then King Philip III of Spain, brought an unknown number of Leonardo's manuscripts and drawings to Madrid. Juan de Espina, a presbyter, musicologist, and cultural adviser to the King of Spain, bought a portion of these original manuscripts. The aim is to re-evaluate the figure of Espina as a potential adherent of Leonardo's advanced technology because, being himself an expert, he was perfectly able to understand and apply these ideas for technological projects. In particular, some sources attest that Espina built a mechanical lion for Philip IV, just like the well-known one constructed by Leonardo for Francis I. |
