Abstract:
'In August 1945, the press picked up avidly one particular publication from a surprising quarter--a work of fiction, the novel, "Public Faces" which had been written by Harold Nicolson thirteen years before. In it, Nicolson had rather accurately predicted the effects of dropping an atomic bomb. This paper will deal with the circumstances in which "Public Faces" and other novels on similar themes were written as examples of the interplay between general and scientific cultures before and after the bomb.'
