| Titolo: | Science as a cultural ornament : Bunsen, Kirchhoff and Helmholtz in mid-nineteenth-century Baden / by Frank A.J.L. James. |
| Abstract: | 'It is now widely accepted that in pre-1871 Germany there was keen competition between the Kingdoms, Grand Duchies and Electorates to establish their own separate identities within Germany. By attracting eminent scholars, not only those working in the sciences, to their universities, individual states gained the advantage of being associated with important and distinctive scholarly activity. In this paper I shall suggest not only that this helps explain why particular scientific appointments were made in some states and especially in the Grand Duchy of Baden, but were also essential to the creation of a cultural image of science in the German states.' |
