Abstract:
In an earlier issue of the "Archive", R. C. Ridell argued that the astronomical and mathematical developments associated with the name of Eudoxus did not grow out of the earlier mathematical idea of "anthyphairesis". Fowler points out "that the Eudoxan definition of proportion can grow directly and naturally out of older anthyphairetic procedures..."
