Idiosyncrasy, achromatic lenses, and early Romanticism / by Keith Hutchison.
Abstract:
'In the present paper, the clash between these contrasting characterisations of Romanticism [confidence in unity of nature vs. diversity of nature] is examined through a close dissection of the issue at stake in a dispute centered on one of the most important episodes in the history of optical technology, the mid-18th realisation that it is possible to use combinations lenses to correct chromatic aberration.'
