| Abstract: | This paper treats the history of a surveying problem in which both the height of a mountain or tower and its distance from the observer are to be determined in cases where the distance between observer and object cannot be crossed This problem arises in works by the Chinese (Liu Hui), Indians (Aryabhata, Brahmagupta), Arabs (al-Biruni) and the Christians of the Middle Ages (Geometria incerti auctoris, Hugo de Sancto Victore), all of which present similar examples and methods of solution |
