Titolo: | The Bellevue grand électroaimant, 1900-1940 : birth of a research-technology community / Terry Shinn. |
Abstract: | '... the early 20th century saw the rise of a new division of labor within science: the research-technology community. This community consists of academic scientists who devote most or all of their career to the invention and improvement of technologies used in experimentation. Research-technology became a semi-autonomous, full-fledged intellectual and institutional sphere in the 1920s and 1930s. It provided a legitimacy that enabled some researchers to resist pressures from the experimental and theoretical communities. The history of the Bellevue giant magnet and French low temperature physics constitutes a revealing episode in the emergence of this new division of labor in science.' Aimé Cotton (1869-1951) designed and constructed the Bellevue electromagnet and directed the magnet laboratory |
