'The concentration on the reception of Kepler's laws has tended to obscure the fact that, whether astronomers accepted the first two laws or not, they accepted his research programme: the determination of the cause of planetary motion as a valid aim of astronomical inquiry and the determination of actual planetary paths and velocities.'
