Abstract:
'My major thesis is that in the British medical writings from c. 1600 to c. 1760, to talk about mental disease' in its strict sense was impossible in the language of learned medicine, because there was no such thing as diseased mind. When doctors talked about madness, they were talking about a disease of the body in which the soul of the patient remained absolutely intact.'
