'The following pages are directed toward understanding the circumstances of the illegitimate child [the daughter of Albert Einstein and Mileva Maric]. They begin by reviewing general patterns of fertility in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. Interest turns to fertility in the regions where Einstein and Maric lived together, as well as in the lands where they were born and educated. Commentary then follows on contraceptive practice in Central Europe around 1900. The discussion concludes with an appraisal of the extent to which Einstein and Maric were exceptional in their vital decisions and life style.'
