I should like to argue here that the humanists' role in the Archimedean revival was in establishing, from sources unknown or neglected in the Middle Ages, the reputation of Archimedes as a practical designer and builder of useful instruments and machines. Once established, this reputation helped to bring Archimedes to the attention of practical, mathematically talented men, who subsequently found by studying his works (which humanists usually did not do) a mathematician of sublime and prodigious power.' |
