Laplace's early work : chronology and citations / Stephen M. Stigler.
Abstract:
"This present investigation presents a chronological accounting of the memoirs Laplace presented to the Académie from the first one he read on March 28, 1770, until the end of 1773. The account is based upon a systematic inspection of the "Procès-verbaux" of the Académie des Sciences for this period, and a comparison of this record (and the examiner's reports) with Laplace's published memoirs. In addition, the citations in these published works to Laplace's own as well as others' work were studied to corroborate other evidence regarding the order and time of publication. One unexpected bonus from this study was the discovery that two of Laplace's earliest memoirs were not lost but were translated into Latin and published in the "Acta eruditorum" in Leipzig."
