| Abstract: | 'Forty years ago, Francis Carmody published a brief 15th-century astronomical text under the title Regiomontanus' notes on al-Bitrûjî's astronomy'. According to Carmody, the text showed that the Vienna-trained Regiomontanus (1436-76) was critical of the homocentric astronomical tradition ... and also that he had misunderstood at a number of junctures the leading medieval proponent of that tradition, the 12th-century Spanish astronomer al-Bitruji ... A careful examination of both Carmody's published transcription and the manuscript shows ... that his attribution of the notes to Regiomontanus is almost certainly an error.' |
