On the American reaction to the discovery of the planet Neptune at the Berlin Observatory in 1846. 'We argue that an analysis of the American response provides a rich variety of insights into the working of the nascent American scientific community, as well as providing an important case study of the making of, and negotiations surrounding, a scientific discovery.'
