Abstract:
'I would like to suggest that the current views on the origins of molecular biology are too limited ... As a case in point, I would like to examine the work done within plant physiology--specifically, the attempts by plant physiologists to explain the process of photosynthesis. This case will demonstrate that another area of biological study, that of bioenergetics', or the transformation of energy by living systems, needs to be added to those of structure' and ìnformation' in the story of the rise of molecular biology.'
