Abstract:Discusses the work of Edward Forbes (1815-1854) and the Dredging Committee of Section D of the British Association. Reconstructs the background of marine zoological research in the 1830s, elucidates the origins and activities of Forbes's committee, documents the close linkage of ecological and especially geological ideas to the marine zoological aspirations in the committee's early work, reemphasizes the importance of Forbes's personality in catalyzing these events, and discusses what was probably Forbes's most popular theory, the "azoic zone"
