"The fact that Darwin continued to believe in perfect adaptation from his pre-Malthus period until after 1844 will require, I think, a new analysis of the character and development of Darwin's theory. But since it has not been noticed before, and has been implicitly denied by most Darwin scholars who have discussed the problem of adaptation, the first task must be to establish the fact. That is the limited aim of this paper."
