Abstract:'I first briefly describe how the modern western understanding of the etiology and treatment of tuberculosis was conveyed to China directly, by Protestant missionaries, and indirectly, via Japan. I then argue that the germ theory was perceived differently in different sections of Chinese society, and that these differences were further amplified in the process of selective assimilation by which various groups reinterpreted western medical knowledge in context-specific ways.'
