'This essay has one central argument: that Louis Pasteur and Émile Roux, his leading collaborator on rabies, were sometimes at odds in their approach to that disease because Pasteur was an experimental scientist from start to finish, while Roux never entirely forgot the lessons of his initial training and brief experience in clinical medicine.'
