'Between 1925 and 1980 independent Boards of the Basic Sciences in 23 states and the District of Columbia administered over 150,000 examinations to health care practitioners, the great majority of whom were M.D.'s... During their existence, basic science boards generated much discussion and debate. With their recent statutory repeal the history of the rise and fall of such boards and their meaning to health professional licensure can be fully assessed.'
