Abstract:
'The discussions that took place in the years around 1900 on the pathogeny of certain diseases (diabetes insipidus, acromegaly) and on their origins in the pituitary gland evidence many ambiguities in the explanatory hypotheses ... These discussions also reveal the inconsistency of experimental phenomena and clinical observations. In this article I emphasize the difficulties as well as the creativity of experimental medicine.'
