"By studying a controversial correspondence between Darboux and Houël I intend to describe and partly explain the mathematical and epistemological problems raised by the mathematicians who took part in the movement to provide the calculus with more secular foundations during the last third of the 19th century ... I then expand the discussion in order to deal with the whole of mathematical research at the time and the question why French mathematicians lagged behind in the newest trends in mathematical research developed in Germany and Italy which Riemann originated. Finally ... I clarify the obvious connections between the movement in mathematics during this period and the national cultural and institutional contexts within which this movement took place.' |
