This paper is 'concerned with particular situations that led scientists to study their instruments and aim at standardization, thus with the "transition" from increasing individual self-criticism to institutional regulation. Reflexive concerns were crucial to decisive developments of 19th-century physical sciences, and played a catalysing and innovative role.'
