Abstract:
'The primary purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed account of both David Brewster's and Henry Brougham's involvement in a debate between the two rival theories of light during the early 1850s. We will conclude that the behavior of the participants in this debate does not conform to Lakatos's philosophical account of science ... We also conclude that recent sociological studies of scientific controversies underestimate scientists' freedom of action.'
