The anthropology of incommensurability / Mario Biagioli.
Abstract:
'By analyzing the dialogue (or rather lack of it) between Galileo and the Tuscan Aristotelians during the debate on buoyancy in 1611-13, I want to argue that incommensurability between competing paradigms is not just an unfortunate problem of linguistic communication, but it plays an important role in the process of scientific change and paradigm-speciation.'
