'William Robert Grove, Professor of Experimental Philosophy at the London Institution from 1841 to 1846, author of "The correlation of physical forces" and one of the leading lights in the movement to reform the Royal Society, might easily be regarded as one of the forgotten giants of 19th-century science ... This paper will attempt to rediscover William Robert Grove and, through him, some aspects of the complex culture which he inhabited.'
