Titolo:The printer's copy of Commandino's translation of Archimedes, 1558 / Pamela Neville.
Abstract:A manuscript recently discovered in London represents an important link between Renaissance studies in Greek mathematics and the birth of modern algebra. The manuscript is in three parts. The first section is the printer's copy for the first edition of Federico Commandino's translation of Archimedes, published by Paolo Manuzio in Venice in 1558. Commandino has made corrections and written directions for the printer in his own hand. Forty-one engraved geometric figures, proofs for the printed edition, are pasted in the margins. The next section consists of a collection of letters and notes, all concerning problems of geometry and mathematics. Eight of the leaves appear to be in the hand of Commandino's pupil, Guidobaldo dal Monte. The last section, probably written in northern France in the early seventeenth century, is closely related to the mathematical investigations of François Viète. The text, apparently the work of a student, covers the various topics of the "new algebra" and cites the work of Viète. This volume was at one time part of the Albani Library. The arms of Giovanni Francesco Albani (Pope Clement XI) are stamped on the first leaf of the Archimedes text. In the nineteenth century it entered the collection of Baldassarre Boncompagni Ludovisi
