| Abstract: | The origins of the Accademia dei Lincei are rooted in a moment of deep theoretical tension, between methods that reflect the weight of the great Greek scientific texts which had returned into circulation and the fresh contributions of empirical data, particularly enriched by the new discoveries. At the same time magic-hermetic influences existed alongside positions of great rational validity. In the work of Cesi and of the first Lincei, different forces and difìerent ways of conceiving the science of nature, from the "segreti" and the "magia" of Della Porta to the "ragione" and "esperienze" of the Galileans are interwoven. The author attempts to provide a comprehensive picture of this pattern drawing extensively on the "Carteggio Lincei" |
