| Abstract: | Following an invitation made by Coronelli Society, in Vienna, the Navy captain Antonio Estacio dos Reis, made the list of the old globes in Portugal. After three years of searching in museums, astronomical observatories, archives, libraries and many other government and private collections, the author found 96 globes made from the seventeenth to end-nineteenth century. He stresses the great importance of such lists for calling the attention of owners of scientific instruments to the urgent need to protect them from their worst enemies: the degradation wrought by time and, of equal if not greater importance, the damage due to the negligence of man |
