| Titolo: | The 'sGravesande collection in the Museum Boerhaave, Leiden / Peter de Clercq. |
| Abstract: | One of the key holdings of the Museum Boerhaave in Leiden are the original philosophical instruments, designed for experimental research and for lecture demonstrations by W. J. 's Gravesande, most of which were constructed by J. van Musschenbroek. Altough valuable as a first account, the printed catalogue of 1951 leaves many questions unanswered about this collection, both regarding its genesis and its later vicissitudes after it had been absorbed into the Leiden Physical Cabinet following 's Gravesande's death in 1742. Drawing partly upon unused manuscripts in the Leiden University Archives, the author intends eventually to produce a new catalogue of this collection. The present paper, a first report on this ' work in progress ', was read at the Sixth Scientific Instrument Symposium, held in Florence on 7-10 October 1986 |
