Abstract:
The conceiving of rectilinear sundials, both specific and universal ones, was very complex, even if today it is rather easy to verify their validity as astronomical instruments thanks to spherical trigonometry. Yet, the intellectual process that led to their creation is no doubt of geometrical nature. This process was systematically neglected in the ancient books of gnomonics; we are trying here to retrace it, starting from the menaeus by Vitruvius, which is at the basis of the geometrical structure of these sundials. We examined all the presently known historical sources in order to discover the origin of rectilinear sundials and to trace their history
