Titolo:Galileo as symbol : the Tuscan artist in Paradise lost / Neil Harris.
Abstract:The controversy over Milton's famous visit to Galileo is described and the arguments for both sides summarised. The objections made against Milton's claim stem from an inadequate understanding of the historical context. However Milton's famous simile of the "Tuscan artist" in Paradise Lost can hardly refer to Galileo and is in fact a Satanic image drawing on Florence's long history of schism and discord. Allusions to the achievements of explorers and astronomers are shown to be common topoi in the seventeenth-century epic, a point which Milton exploits to discredit the new heroic ethic they represent. Finally Brunetto Latini's prophecy in the Inferno links Galileo, Dante and Milton himself in the image of the "one just man" who through patience and long suffering becomes truly heroic
