Abstract:On the basis of some unpublished or hitherto unknown documents, this essay examines the attitudes of Lavoisier and Priestley towards the French Revolution. The persecution of the two scientists during the period 1789-1794 is reconsidered in a new light. Lavoisier was brought to trial because of his position as a General Farmer during the Ancien régime and, in spite of his increasing commitment to the defense and development of the principles of the Revolution, his position was already compromised in 1789. By contrast, Priestely was persecuted for his attempts to connect his scientific investigations with his radical political beliefs
