Abstract:During the eighteenth century, Italian scientists made important contributions to progress in the study of Geology and Palaeontology. In particular, naturalists at the Academy of Science in Bologna started a systematic search for fossils in the Appenine mountains at the beginnings of the century. Giuseppe Monti (1682-1760) is to be credited with having founded modern palaeontology in Bologna. He conceived and organised the Museum Diluvianum in Scientiarum Instituto, the first real museum of Palaeontology in Italy
