| Abstract: | This paper discusses the different phases of neo-Lamarckism in France between 1843 (date of publication of Jules Guérin's Essai de physiologie générale) and 1930 (date of publication of Ronald Fisher's The genetical theory of natural selection) and the conditions which made its various forms possible. All these forms are shown to be attempts to transform a history of nature into a general science and philosophy of nature in the light of a "mechanical view of the universe" and of a general physiology of adaptation. This general science of nature, however, was unified in purpose, but not in the details of its realization. To explain how this situation came about, the paper focuses on a thematic comparison between the work of Edmond Perrier and that of Alfred Giard, who shared a general approach to the evolution of life, but were separated by many conceptual differences |
