Titolo:The astrolabe presented by Regiomontanus to Cardinal Bessarion in 1462 / David A. King, Gerard L'E. Turner.
Abstract:A newly-identified corpus of mid-fifteenth century German astrolabes has been examined in detail, with particular attention paid to the engraving and construction. There are eleven astrolabes: in the group, and it is concluded that they were made in one, or perhaps two, workshops. The location of the workshops is not yet clear, but Vienna is doubtless the provenance of at least the earliest piece, dated 1457. One astrolabe in the group is of particular historical significance because it was presented at Rome in 1462, with a dedicatory inscription, to Cardinal Bessarion (1403-1472), titular Latin patriarch of Constantinople from 1463, and one of the illustrious Greek scholars who contributed to the great revival of letters in the fifteenth century. The astrolabe was presented by Johannes Regiomontanus (1436-1476), whose patron was Bessarion. Regiomontanus, the foremost European astronomer of the time, was commissioned by the Cardinal to prepare an Epitome of Ptolemy's Almagest, also dedicated to him in 1462
