Abstract: | In the exploitation of timber and its improvement, mathematical practitioners and natural philosophers both seemed to have contributions to make in the later 17th century. The paper examines a number of techniques employed during the period, and some innovations, relating the latter to the Baconian scrutiny of the natural world deployed by such natural philosophers as John Evelyn, Robert Plot and Nehemiah Grew. An hitherto unpublished letter on the subject by the latter is included in an appendix |
